Cuba Reshapes Its Tourism Landscape as New Hotel and Flight Developments Take Shape.

An important paradigm shift is eroding the conventional destination models in view of the unprecedented progress of the realignment of the urban tourism in Cuba. Given the official sixty five percent reduction in international tourist numbers, the economic operations of the destinations are being adversely affected due to the fuel shortage in air travel, the cancellation of flights and the withdrawal of top European hoteliers from their military joint ventures. Given that the state-run hotel chains are sealing many of the rooms for want of electricity, the tourists are gravitating towards private accommodation providers, restaurants and transportation systems in the secondary cities.

The structural destabilisation of Cuba’s leisure economy represents a systemic operational crisis rather than a standard cyclical downturn. Official macroeconomic data released by the Oficina Nacional de Estadística e Información (ONEI) documents an unprecedented contraction in physical visitor entries, tourist expenditures, and lodging asset utilisation across all municipal territories.
